Wayne Cousin focuses his practice on the defense of complex high-exposure medical, dental, podiatric and chiropractic malpractice matters. In addition, his practice includes the defense of labor, employment, products liability, and other personal injury litigation.

For more than 20 years Wayne has successfully represented physicians, nurses, hospitals, podiatrists, dentists, chiropractors, and corporations in a variety of medical specialties including ophthalmology, cardiology, otolaryngology, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, internal medicine, gastroenterology, pathology, radiology, obstetrics and gynecology and various types of surgery. Wayne defends dentists including endodontists, periodontists, general dentists and oral surgeons. In addition, he defends podiatrists in a wide array of cases including bunionectomy, neuroma and hammertoe surgeries. His practice also includes handling matters involving race, age and gender discrimination, reasonable accommodation, and workplace harassment.

Prior to joining Sheeley, Wayne was a trial partner at a major defense firm in Manhattan handling a diverse caseload including the defense of hospitals, physicians, dentists, podiatrists and other health care professionals. Wayne also led the firm’s labor and employment group, successfully defending cases involving employment discrimination, Labor Law, products liability, and premises liability claims.

Wayne lectures on various aspects of risk management and medical defense to professionals at several New York City area hospitals. From 2015 to 2019 Wayne spoke about medical legal issues unique to cataract surgeries and other ophthalmological issues at a symposium for residents at the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary Department of Ophthalmology. He contributed several articles to The New York Law Journal examining a variety of discovery and trial-related issues.

Wayne lives in Monmouth County, New Jersey with his wife, Laura, children, Jonathan and Deborah, and Yorkie-Bichon, Lexie. He speaks Spanish and enjoys playing basketball, reading, playing the guitar and composing musical scores for his band The Optical Illusion, and fantasy football.
