Of Counsel

Thomas Fergus has decades of experience in complex litigation with expertise in high-exposure medical malpractice cases and the defense of nursing homes and long-term care providers. He has successfully negotiated favorable resolutions for medical care facilities and individual health care providers in a diverse range of specialties in the U.S. and Ireland. Tom brings his strong negotiation skills to represent individual and corporate clients in trials, mediations, and arbitrations. As a key partner in Sheeley’s PRIDE (Promptly Report Incidents Disclose and Explain) program, Tom advises long-term care facilities about how to effectively minimize litigation exposure when resident incidents occur.

Previously, as a partner at a major New York City defense firm, Tom’s caseload included representing medical care providers at every pre-trial stage of high pressure, multi-litigant medical malpractice cases. Tom also represented clients at professional misconduct proceedings and in negligence and premises liability matters. Tom enjoys training associates in developing their legal writing and discovery skills.

Early in his career at a general practice solicitors’ firm in Dublin, Ireland, Tom gained knowledge of the Irish civil legal system and focused in personal injury, libel, and commercial property disputes. He is a member of the bar of the states of New York and Massachusetts.

Tom lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and two daughters. He spends time in the summer with his family on the West Coast of Ireland, enjoys running, coaching softball and reading biographies.
