Before joining Sheeley LLP, Sheila managed many roles at the largest municipal healthcare system in the United States.  Not only did she oversee 17 outside counsel firms, as claims counsel lead and outside counsel liaison, she managed more than 400 complex medical malpractice files for three busy hospital facilities.  She directed the system’s captive program and helmed its “Fast Track” program.  She participated in Risk Council meetings, and served as counsel for for the CEO at Quality Assurance meetings.

Noteworthy Cases

In her career, Sheila has successfully defended hundreds of private and public sector cases of significant value and/or newsworthiness.   She has a wealth of experience representing private medical and hospital facilities, as well as numerous city agencies and departments, including FDNY/EMS, NYPD, DOC, DOE, DOT, and DOS.  Her summary judgment victories significantly reduced settlements and defense verdicts on cases believed to be risky or indefensible.  Sheila’s attention to detail secured a discontinuance on a supposedly indefensible, significant value BDB case, where settlement had previously been recommended.  In another case, Sheila obtained a medical malpractice dismissal where a plaintiff’s counsel failed to follow the directives of the CPLR, which was upheld on appeal.

Sheila’s experience working for plaintiffs and defendants makes her well equipped to understand the strengths and weaknesses of each side.  She has dedicated 20 years of her career to public service, where she successfully represented and defended multiple city agencies and departments. Sheila truly enjoys her work in the legal field, is passionate in her ongoing commitment and dedication to her clients, and does so with integrity.

Sheila lives in NYC with her husband and rescue dog.  She enjoys skiing, hiking, travelling and spending time with her children.

For over a decade Sheila has run a bi-annual diaper drive for teen parents in her community, which collects and donates necessities to young families in need.

While working for the NYC Health + Hospitals Corporation, Sheila presented at training lectures and seminars on numerous legal topics.
